Decking FAQ
Straight answers to the questions Brisbane homeowners ask us most. Still unsure? Call 0492 984 440.
Timber or composite decking?
Hardwood looks and feels natural and can be sanded and re oiled, but needs regular upkeep. Composite costs more up front, does not need oiling and resists rot and splinters. We can quote both.
Do I need approval to build a deck in Brisbane?
Decks more than 1 metre above ground, or decks with a roof, generally need building approval in Queensland. Low decks often do not. We will tell you what applies to your design.
How long does a new deck take?
A simple low deck can take a few days. Larger or elevated decks with stairs and balustrades take longer, plus time for any approvals. We give you a timeline with the quote.
How often should I oil a timber deck?
In Brisbane sun, most timber decks look best when cleaned and re oiled every 12 months or so. Decks in full sun may need it more often.
Can you repair my deck instead of replacing it?
Often yes. If the frame is sound, replacing damaged boards and fixings can give the deck years more life. If the joists or bearers are rotten, we will explain the options.
What does a new deck cost in Brisbane?
It depends on size, height, materials, stairs and balustrades. We give you a clear written quote after measuring up, with options if you want to compare timber and composite.
Is my deck safe?
Warning signs are soft or springy boards, rot at the ends of joists, rusted fixings and balustrades that move when you lean on them. If you are unsure, stay off the affected area and have it checked.
How high does a deck need to be before it needs a balustrade?
As a guide, decks more than 1 metre above the ground need a balustrade. Rules on height and gaps apply, and we build to them.
